Rectus Diastasis is not gender-specific

This story is about one of my friends and trainees, this could be surprising as I usually work with postnatal women and the program was also created mainly for them, but there is a lesson to learn: this problem is not gender-specific.

He is here to tell his story, read it well and learn from it; the proper workout is essential.

Tamas had weight problems through his whole life, and because of it – or despite of it – he has been doing hard workout in the last 16 years.

His abs problems started when he added an extra 16-exercise abs program to his regular workout, and did it several times a week with his friends. All these exercises were based on crunches and sit-ups.

‘It actually meant crunches in series of various positions i.e. feet towards each other and with legs up straight – this felt the worst for me. There were also side sit-ups with one shoulder on the ground.

One night I realized that the left side of my abs seems to be slipped aside, there is some kind of a bump and it does not look good at all.’

He asked one of his friends to have a look at it.

‘He told me to have a look at my belly button. I went out to see it in the mirror and realized that I produced myself a hernia.’

He felt pain in the linea alba (midline) several times but he did not stop doing these exercises which lead to a hernia and a serious diastasis recti (abs separation).

His hernia needed an operation

‘The post-operation phase is very tough, I suggest everyone to avoid it. I did not have a surgical cut nevertheless all my inner parts were affected at that area. I could not stand up without help for 3 days after the surgery. Even if it was executed professionally and with very much care, it gives huge pain and takes you out of your workout routine for 6-8 weeks and also from work for 2-3 weeks. It must be taken very seriously!’

The 8 weeks passed so we start doing abs regeneration for healing the diastasis recti and learning the basics of doing workout correctly.
